Tom is a young man living alone in a cottage with his widowed mother in 1974. His grandfather returned from the First World War and made a failed attempt to escape the village. His son, Tom's father, was killed in the Second World War. Now in 1974 Tom is making his own plans to get away. The cycle continues with the menace of poverty, entrapment and war grinning through the veil of rural beauty. AKENFIELD gives us a picture of vanished Britain that is docmentary-like in its depiction of a rural community. Ground-breaking filmmaking.
