Writer-director Constantine Costa-Gavras won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for this gripping thriller set in Chile, in which an American couple search for their son following the 1973 coup. Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek both earned Oscar nominations for their outstanding performances in this carefully manipulated drama, accentuated by the nightmarish imagery of society in revolt.
