Kazan’s landmark film was cutting edge in 1949 due to its exanimation of race hate and miscegenation in a pre-Civil Rights movement America. A bi-racial woman sent north as a child and passing for white returns as an adult to the Deep South and meets bigotry head on as she is treated as black woman. Wonderful performances are given from the entire cast, Ethel Waters, Jeanne Crain and Ethel Barrymore were all Oscar nominated.
