John Hustons bleak, hallucinatory adaptation of Malcolm Lowrys novel is set during the Mexican Day of the Dead in 1939. Albert Finney stars as the alcoholic former British consul to Cuernevarca, whose self-destructive behaviour is a source of perplexity and sadness to his idealistic half-brother and his ex-wife.
