Imitation of Life
Beautifully directed and finely acted, this is one of the greatest melodramas ever made. Sirk’s last Hollywood film is a majestic example of his skill as a director and perhaps his finest. It is a rags-to-riches tale of two intertwined families (an actress and her black maid) which counterpoints race, materialism and success against their true desires and need for happiness.
